On 23rd June 2025, it was announced that people living with obesity will be able to begin accessing Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) for weight loss purposes in primary care settings (GP surgeries). The national roll out, however, does not mean that all people will immediately be able to get a prescription for Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) on/from this date.
In Mid and South Essex, access to Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) will initially be through specialist weight management services ONLY. Weight management services are locally commissioned at an Integrated Care Board (ICB) level.
Access to Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) through primary care is not expected to start in Mid and South Essex until later in 2025.
However, this doesn’t stop people attempting to start a conversation about weight management and we encourage those living with obesity and multi morbidity to start the journey.
This does not mean prescriptions will be provided immediately. It means primary care settings can begin discussions with patients about their weight and whether Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) is the right option to improve their health through weight loss along with consideration of other alternative pathways.
