Super Bodies: Protect Your Child This Winter With Free Vaccinations

Every child has a Super Body — a powerful immune system designed to fight off winter bugs. But some viruses, like flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), can still cause serious illness, and that’s where vaccinations come in to strengthen their natural defences.

Winter is coming, and flu isn’t just a bad cold. It can make children seriously unwell, sometimes leading to bronchitis, pneumonia, and hospitalisation. The good news? Free protection is available for the whole family.

Children aged 2-17 can get their free flu vaccine. The vaccine is administered as a nasal spray for children aged 2–16, as well as children aged 17 who have certain long-term health conditions. It’s trusted by millions of families and helps stop flu spreading through schools and families.

If you’re pregnant, you can protect both yourself and your baby with free flu and RSV vaccines. Pregnant women and people are at higher risk of serious complications from flu and getting vaccinated passes vital antibodies to your baby. The RSV vaccine (available from 28 weeks) gives your baby protection for their first six months — when they need it most.

Don’t forget common winter illnesses.
Children’s Super Bodies can usually manage everyday bugs like coughs, colds, sore throats and earaches with rest, fluids and care. Most of these are viral and don’t need antibiotics. Simple steps like keeping your little ones hydrated, as well as giving them pain relief and giving plenty of rest, will usually help them recover.

Should symptoms persist or worsen — for example, if a high temperature lasts more than 5 days, a child has difficulty breathing, or they seem very unwell, parents should seek medical advice from their GP or call NHS 111.

These simple steps empower you to give your family the best possible protection. Most parents across Essex choose to vaccinate because it’s one of the most effective ways to keep their loved ones healthy.
